Stir Up Sunday, 20 November 2011

Join this free family activity with Gunnersbury's Victorian servants as they prepare for the Christmas festivities!

Traditionally, Christmas preparations in a big household would begin on the last Sunday before the church services for Advent. This was known as Stir-Up Sunday. Gunnersbury's Victorian kitchens will be decked with holy and ivy to put you in the Christmas spirit. You can help the servants pound the sugar and spices, stir the plum pudding and make a Christmas wish!

You might discover a few Christmas traditions . . . For example, why is the pudding stirred fro east to west? Why does the recipe for mince pies include three spices? And who are the Lord and Lady of Misrule?

No advance booking is necessary, just come along and join one of these three sessions during the day: 11.30am to 12.30pm, 1 to 2pm or 2.30 to 3.30pm.

Please note: Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
