Branching Out exhibition: 9 – 31 May 2009
This is the sixth biennial exhibition of the Isleworth and District Branch of the Embroiderers’ Guild - and their first at Gunnersbury.
On show will be a variety of works by members in which they have been encouraged to “branch out” and try new ideas. Exhibits range from flat textile pieces to large 3D sculptures like the palm tree. Even when they use traditional stitches it may be for a very surprising subject. One piece of colourful, decorative embroidery is actually a map showing Chiswick roundabout! (See photo)
Also on show will be some more traditional embroideries from the museum’s own collection, including a child’s sampler and a man’s waistcoat, hand-embroidered in the eighteenth century.
The exhibition will be at the museum for three weeks and for most of that time there will be a chance for visitors to have a go at some embroidery under the guidance of a guild member.
Admission is free and the exhibition is open during usual museum opening hours – 11am – 5pm, 7 days a week.
